中國古代壁畫藝術源遠流長。在唐代，由於國家統一，經濟文化發展繁榮，思想先進開放，中外交流頻繁，繪畫藝術的發展也達到鼎盛時期。

唐代墓室壁畫是唐代繪畫史上的一朵奇葩，是中國繪畫史上璀璨的明珠。尤其在西安地區發掘的墓葬中，有眾多精美壁畫。唐代厚葬風行，在當時的都城長安及其周邊諸縣中，集中分佈著18座唐代帝陵。這些陵墓選用當時好的畫師創作壁畫，代表了當時最精湛的繪畫水準，並基本體現了唐代各時期特徵。

唐墓壁畫是陝西歷史博物館獨具特色的珍貴藏品。《中國古代壁畫唐代陜西歷史博物館藏》如懿德太子墓“闕樓圖”“儀衛圖”，章懷太子墓“客使圖”“馬球圖”“狩獵出行圖”，永泰公主墓“宮女圖”等，體現了唐代各時期繪畫的高水準。值得一提的是，書中特別收錄北周時期的安伽墓石屏刻繪高清圖十四幅，為研究北周史、中西文化交流史，以及北周時期文化、藝術、墓葬形制等方面提供了極為罕見的資料。

陜西歷史博物館收藏的唐墓壁畫數量之多、等級之高、保存狀況之好，時間序列之完整，這在全國乃至全世界都絕無僅有，廣泛涉及唐代社會歷史、文化、藝術等領域，具有“補史”“證史”“寫史”和的重要意義。

全套書整體分為縱、橫兩條線，縱線以時間為序，將20個唐代墓葬按歷史先後次序排列，客觀反映由初唐、盛唐到唐中晚期轉變的時代面貌和生活狀態；橫線為單個墓葬的壁畫編號排列順序。以此兩條主線將作品串聯起來，詳細介紹各個墓葬的史料背景，完美呈現壁畫作品。

對於單個墓葬的展現，包括文字資料和圖片資料。文字資料含墓葬壁畫相關壁畫資料和壁畫作品釋文。壁畫相關資料包括對墓室、墓主等作客觀描述和介紹，以便讀者清晰瞭解與該墓相關的歷史時代背景、儀禮規範、生活習俗、服飾特色、娛樂方式與建築風格，管窺蠡測唐代社會生活尤其貴族生活和精神追求。

陝西歷史博物館編著。陝西歷史博物館是展示陝西歷史文化和中國古代文明的藝術殿堂。唐墓壁畫是陝西歷史博物館獨具特色的珍貴藏品，共有20多座唐墓的壁畫精品600幅。其中5件（組）18幅被國家定為重量，69件（組）82幅被定為一級品。
